This might turn out to be the best Christmas gift of the season: Codigo has produced a lavish 4-CD boxed set consisting of the label's iconic salsa tracks featuring all you might expect and more: Alegre All Stars, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Celia Cruz, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, La Lupe Cheo Feliciano, Ricardo Ray/Bobby Cruz, Harlow, Tito Puente, Roberto Roena and a ton of others. Disk four expands into more modern salsa too, bring in artists like La India, Jose Alberto, Frankie Ruiz, Puerto Rican Power, Andy Montanez and others. The set is complete with a beautifully printed bound 40 page booklet, on heavy glossy stock paper, all within a hard-cover package that would be worthy of bookshelf display. 58 tracks of pure salsa scripture. Well done liners by Ernesto Lechner.

A stone classic by one of salsa’s all time best interpreters, the Afro-Boricua singer Ismael Rivera, and his awesome band, Los Cachimbos. The album is chock full of amazing compositions, with a sound that just makes you want to dance. Beautiful Cuban ‘tres’ guitar, funky brass, percolating percussion, joyous piano, and darting in and out of the propulsive rhythms, the unique and beautiful voice of ‘Maelo. He manages to combine a weary, melancholy gruffness with a smoky, soulful joy, a feat that seems to effortlessly express the ups and downs of life, especially from the perspective of someone of African Diasporic descent. Contains “Las Caras Lindas”, a Latin Pride anthem written by Puerto Rico’s poet of song, Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso.
