EditorsPick: So here's the big problem for salsa; reggaeton has made it sound stiff, and old fashioned, rhythmically flat. The challenge, then, is to make salsa that won't sound dumb next to Daddy Yankee. The obvious way to juice salsa is to include a rapper; it doesn't work too well. Along comes Michael Stuart to show us how it can be done. It's done by making the music harder than before, changing the sound of the music, using the studio to change the vocals, making sure the tumbao isn't the same old thing, making the rhythm section sound electric, tough, and letting Stuart soneo, his nasal voice sounding so street you'd think that Daddy Yankee would ask him to help out. EditorsPick: Torres always puts out good records, and he's outdone himself this time, producing a masterpiece. Like a handful of other Cuban musicians Torres has begun to reexamine the history of Cuban music instead of just play it. So on a bunch of the tracks here the music is played by a saxophone quartet, with the bass role taken by a tuba. Some of the tunes have percussion and drums, others are a wind choir, and the simple process of arranging the music for the group takes it out of the ordinary. Other tracks have the extraordinary rhythm section of Jorge Reyes on bass and Enrique Pla on drums; it's modern Latin jazz at its best. Torres plays a ton of trombone, and he's joined in the front line by Irvin Acao, a tenor player who could hang in New York. The two of them bring so much to the music, it's like having a dictionary of American and Cuban musical practice, all explained by gifted conversationalists. Highly recommended. (Peter Watrous)

EditorsPick: Torres recorded this on the road, and it's a stripped down quartet date, just him and a working trio. That means there's not much scope, the sort of thing that blesses his normal recordings. And inside almost every Cuban jazz musician lurks the soul of a fusion player wishing they could have played in Mahavishnu or Chick Corea's fusion bands; "Pero Quién" is loaded with fusion-esq writing. Torres is good enough on trombone to take the lead in longer improvising, and the band sounds flexible, worked in. Jorge Arrote, the pianist, sounds strong, pushing chromatic phrases through the static harmony. Recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: With this, arguably his best -- and certainly his most contemporary -- release to date, Mr. Torres' new release packs a suitcase full of Cuban fire. With his son-on-steroids approach (is that something like timba I hear on "Rumba y Son"?) to this project, this CD marks a pivotal landmark for this trombonist and arranger. He seems to have unshackled himself from the weight of traditional Afro Cuban styles, but not of the forms themselves, which he uses playfully, in earnest. The result is Afro Cuban music that builds upon its own formal strength -- a more personal music with many flavors and nuances. "(El Sonero Necesita) Solamente La Claves" is a potent, funky track where Mr. Torres solos his 'bone and throws down a gritty rap. And it works. Vocalists Israel Kantor and Yordi Megret are in top form here. And turn the volume way up on the sparkling descarga "Quimboró" which allows each band member to shine. Highly recommended. (BP)

That explains the direction of the album: it's in part a Latin jazz record, with fine soloing by Maraca on flute on two tunes, and it's all thoughtful. EditorsPick: Wow, here's a find. Bebo, well-recorded in Cuba in 1959, fronting his entire orchestra. And what a sound, big, full and detailed; this is one of the best recordings I've ever heard from this time in Cuba. It's stately, graceful music, orchestral, with beautiful arrangements and perfect playing. On "El Cumbanchero," the heat picks up, fueled by percussion. Be forewarned: Bebo doesn't play much piano here; the stars of the show are the band, and the arrangements, and his always-impeccable sense of tempo. This is easily the equivalent of any of the great bands of the time, Machito, or the Titos. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

EditorsPick: Explosive powerhose and highly percussive Latin jazz led by young vituoso pianist Lázaro Valdés of the Cuban Valdés dynasty. This one, Latin jazz fans, is a monster roller coaster that should not be missed. On "Carcasés a Bobby," one of the best tracks, bassist Osmany Diaz Gil and drummer Rodney Barreto have redefined their instruments. Highly recommended. (BP 09/09/03) What a cool record. Valdes, the pianist, leader and arranger for Bamboleo, has put out a Cuban fusion record, overlaid with smooth jazz that has moments of raw power. It's as if Valdes decided he liked the early electric music of Miles Davis and decided to order it a bit, and make it Cuban. And when he solos, he mashes the harmony, getting into bitter chromaticism, and the rhythms start flying, and what was smooth jazz all of a sudden gets serious. It's intense, and sometimes maudlin, but at it's best it's new (some tracks have two bassists), and you can't help wondering what Valdes would record if he had a decent career and didn't have to try and make money. This isn't for purists looking for an old Cuba; it's modern, influenced by the good and bad of American music. But the level of the musicianship is shocking (the musicians include Bamboleo's fantastic bassist and percussionist), and Valdes, who comes from a family of musicians that includes Alfredito, Marcelino and Vicentico, can be proud of what he's done. EditorsPick: Like the Rubalcaba and Valdés musical dynasties in Cuba, trumpeter Luis Valle belongs to one of those families where almost everyone is a noted musician...and most of them play on this CD. Brothers Pedro and Osvaldo Valle are here on sax, as is brother Moises ("Yumurí") who is a well known singer. Did I mention that his flautist band-leader brother Orlando, better known as "Maraca," also plays on this CD? No? He does. He also composed three of the cuts here. This is arguably one of the best-produced Cuban releases of the year, and, both musically and conceptually, can be seen as an extension of Maraca's superb "Tremenda Rumba" CD which was released simultaneously. Like the Maraca release, it is an intense palette of the modern and traditional, of jazz and folklore, and, of course, explosive dance cuts -- a celebration of Cuban music diversity and skill. Featuring some amazing special guests like the singer Aramis Galindo and tresero Pancho Amat, this is a ambitious project that is a must-have. This super hard to find Japanese import deserves international distribution. Highly recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: If you come to the record without preconceptions you'll be better off. It's nice to hear the band loose and able, and recorded well live. They run through old material, and material off of recent studio recordings and the versions have evolved. At times Formell's bass comes through the huge band sound, and it's amazing to hear what a great player he is. And when the band breaks apart a tune, like they do to "Soy Todo," the recording reminds you that the band deserves its reputation as one of the best live orchestras in the world. Mayito sings with power on five the nine tunes, and he's singing well (though he's got the unlucky role of singing government slogans on "Tim-pop Con Birdland," a tune that quotes the group Weather Report, therefore sounding doubly dated). Yenisel Valdez, who used to rock the house in NG La Banda, sings one song, placing some extraordinary rhythmic improvisations in the middle of "Mi Mimi." And the drummer Samuel Formell is everywhere on the recording, driving the band, marking off sections of tunes; he's one of the Caribbean's best drummers and he makes the music take off. But the group's in transition, having lost half of its personality in Pupy Pedroso, the composer, arranger and pianist, who left. Pedro Calvo has also gone, replaced by Valdez. So the recording, if one is looking for something new, isn't going to give it up; the band sounds as if it's working toward a new identity. As well the majority of the tunes fade out, cutting off what would seem like the best parts of a live performance, the parts where the band breaks the tunes apart. You can hear that sort of explosion on "Esto Te Pone La Cabeza Mala" (before that fades out, too) and it's what's missing on the rest of the album. Recommended, if only as an artifact. EditorsPick: Just when you thought it couldn't be done, The Go Go's come up with an album of material that tops even there best effort to date. From the first cut "Permiso Que Llego Van Van" (which begins with drumset percussion and drunken electronics that can't seem decide what speed to travel) on, you can tell that this is something unusul. It quickly kicks into gear with searing, serious salsa. Since the late sixties when they were an experimental rock band, they have refused to rest on their laurels - they continue to experiment and come up with fresh ideas. This is fiery Salsa with a capital "S." There is only one Van Van. I seem to keep playing this CD...it is infectious. Get it. (BP)

EditorsPick: Villafranca is a young Cuban pianist who's worked or played with Jane Bunnett, Johnny Pacheco, Terell Stafford and a long list of others. He's got good time, and on Incantations he moves from the sound of American Latin jazz of the 1950s to a more modern sound, infused with Santeria singing. The young Cuban drummer Dafnis Prieto is on the album, as is the great jazz guitarist Pat Martino. Pedro Martinez plays batá drums and sings on one track, and Jane Bunnett and Terell Stafford make up the front line of horns. Carlos Henriquez is on bass; this is part of the next generation of Latin jazz musicians, a group of musicians that will be influencing jazz and Latin music in the future. Recommended. EditorsPick: One of the great Cuban rumba groups, tragically under recorded, comes with a new work that opens with, gulp, a piece that's helped out by synthesizer. Thankfully the synthesist went out for a drink for much of the rest of the hour plus recording. And the results are special, fine coros, fine lead singing, and percussion that in its precision is one of the wonders of the 21st century. And there's a woman lead singer; the group does a long suite to the Yoruban gods, along with a Congo piece, and a conga, and a guaguancó with a high-speed rap, which is as far as I know the first recording of a rumba group with a rapper. EditorsPick: Fasten your seat belts, says Gallego on the first track, rapping over percussion, and he isn't kidding because the production brings together some of the best reggaeton rappers - Tego Calderon and Don Omar along with the singers Gilberto Santa Rosa, Papo Rosario,Victor Manuelle, Domingo Quiñones, Tito Nieves, and more. For those of you who can't stand reggaeton, don't worry, half of the tracks here are salsa dura, with the reggaetoners paired off with salseros and relegated to asides or commentary, while the singers rocking the place over a great band. Even with Tego Calderon and Victor Manuelle take an easy walk through "Che Che Cole", where Calderon raps part of the way through, there's still the tough band backing them up; it brings Tego into salsa, not the other way around. And Tego sounds good in the context, too. Three big guys, Tito Nieves and Pedro Brull and John Erick, work through "Los Gorditos", talking about salsa gorda, with Erick rapping at times over the band, then a short percussion break. It works great. Historic music, and a nice attempt to get the two musics to work together. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous)

This mega salsa concert held at Puerto Rico's Tito Puente Amphitheater in December, 2003 featured an all-star cast including the singers Adalberto Santiago, Tito Allen, Luigi Texedor, Papo Sánchez and Sammy Gonzalez, Wichy Camacho, Primi Cruz and Darvel Garcia. Long, rich, salsa grooves are played with intensity and driven to the brink of fever by such players as Piro Rodriguez on trumpet, Paoli Mejias on congas, Endel Dueño on timbales, Edwin Rosario on bass, Prodigio Claudio on cuatro, Javier Oquendo on bongo, and many others. There's a *lot* of material here, requiring the use of two CDs. Also includes a bonus DVD disc that has five smokin' tracks from the show: "Boranda," "Indestructible," "El Rey Del Timbal," "Son Son Charari" and "Seguire Sin Soñar." Special mention must be made of Endel Dueño, who, on the DVD, performs several extended landmark timbale solos that are totally amazing. This guy is a killer, folks. His performances on "Indestructible" and "El Rey Del Timbal" must be seen to be believed. What we have here are some of the best timbale solos ever filmed. Puente would be proud.
