EditorsPick: **Classics Revisited** Willie and Rubén's penultimate collaboration for Fania saw the pioneers of "conscious salsa" still in top form. Though the album garnered a Grammy nomination, it suffered from poor airplay at the time of its release, mainly because of the controversy aroused by Rubén's composition "Tiburón". Twenty-five years later, this masterful production continues to stand up on all levels. Highly Recommended. (John Child)

Willie and Rubén's record-breaking bestseller Siembra made them a new force, with Blades' compositions "Pedro Navaja" (perhaps his most famous song: a reworking of "Mack the Knife") and "Plástico" (a critique of artificial and shallow lifestyles and a call for Latino unity, hope and freedom) proving that salsa need not be formulaic escapism. Combining the talents of the smart young bandleader Willie Colón and the lyrical genius and superb vocalist Rubén Blades, Siembra had managed to offer the perfect blend of social commentary and sizzling urban dance music. With extraordinary arrangements by Mr. Colón, each track is a well-crafted, powerful gem. And, if you are ever lucky enough to see Mr. Blades perform any of the songs from this album, you will bear witness to an audience that knows every word, every inflection. Staying power? The lyrics hit a nerve not just for the Nuyorican audience, but for Latinos worldwide. There are many who consider this the best, and last, real salsa album of the great Fania dynasty. EditorsPick: This is a classic album by one of Cuba's great and underrated soneros. His band, which continued recording after his death, scorches through Potaje and Rumba Pa' Los Rumberos. The only frustrating thing is that these songs are so short. Still, Faz and his boy pack a lot of timba into those couple of minutes, as you'll see with tunes like the swinging son montunos Nadie Baila Como Yo and La Tumba Brava. Although he didn't have a pretty voice, Faz had an ability to make boleros work for him, and he serves up a couple of classics like Sabor a Mí and Dueña de Mi Corazón. Overall, this is puro sabor cubano, pre-Alí Babá y sus cuarenta ladrones, a perfect complement to some dark Bacardí and a Padrón Ejecutivo cigar. (Albel Delgado)
