EditorsPick: **Classics Revisited** "A true sonero in the great Afro-Antillean tradition, Tito Allen is a magnificently gifted singer and a magnetically attractive performer. Not for nothing is he called 'The Elegant One', because he has the smoothest, truest, warmest voice of the many salseros singing today," wrote my Aracataca (http://www.totallyradio.com/show_pages/shows.php?show=88) colleague Tomek in 1995. Tito made a string of seven solo albums for the Alegre label (then part of the Fania empire) between 1975 and 1981, which were mainly produced by Louie Ramírez. Beyond was the fifth in the series. José Madera, currently musical director of the Latin Giants of Jazz, played bongo on six of the albums and contributed arrangements to three. I asked him to share his reminiscences: "The Tito Allen recordings that we did at Fania during those years were pretty unique. I can tell you that we did them without any rehearsing at all. The tunes were brought to the studio, run down once or twice to set routines and fix any wrong notes or copying mistakes on the music and then we recorded them. I don't think that we did more than two or three takes on any one song in that series. Louis Ramírez ran a very loose studio session format and that was conducive in achieving such a good performance on all those tunes. They are all pretty much well played and pretty swinging renditions." José arranged three of the standout cuts on Beyond: "El Embajador", "Lluvia" and a ferociously swinging version of the Willie Rosario composition "Dame Tu Amor Morenita", which Willie originally recorded for his 1963 debut album El Bravo Soy Yo on Alegre. The remainder of the arranging chores are shared by Louie, Paquito Pastor (pianist on this and five other albums in the series), Sonny Bravo, Tito Puente / René Bloch and Marty Sheller, who reworks the Tito Rodríguez standard "Estoy Como Nunca". Louie, president of Alegre at the time, did not stint on the number of sidemen for Allen's sessions for the label. The top-of-the-range lineup here is a veritable big band with a brass section bulging with trumpets, trombones and saxes, including such luminaries as trumpeters Puchi Boulong and Ray Maldonado, trombonists Papo Vásquez and Sam Burtis, and sax players Mario Rivera and Bobby Porcelli, plus a rhythm section sporting the likes of bassist Eddie "Gua Gua" Rivera, timbalero Mike Collazo and conguero Papo Pepin. Solos abound without compromising the dance groove, for instance, Maldonado's trumpet blazes on "Dame Tu Amor Morenita" and Pastor takes a nice jazz inflected solo on "Algun Dia". Once you have tasted Beyond, you will want to collect the rest of Tito's Alegre series: Maldades '75, Feliz y Dichoso '76, Ahora y Siempre '77, Untouchable '79, Unique '80 and A Los Muchachos '81. Definitely an essential purchase. Highly recommended. (John Child)

Though the album garnered a Grammy nomination, it suffered from poor airplay at the time of its release, mainly because of the controversy aroused by Rubén's composition "Tiburón". EditorsPick: This is a classic album by one of Cuba's great and underrated soneros. His band, which continued recording after his death, scorches through Potaje and Rumba Pa' Los Rumberos. The only frustrating thing is that these songs are so short. Still, Faz and his boy pack a lot of timba into those couple of minutes, as you'll see with tunes like the swinging son montunos Nadie Baila Como Yo and La Tumba Brava. Although he didn't have a pretty voice, Faz had an ability to make boleros work for him, and he serves up a couple of classics like Sabor a Mí and Dueña de Mi Corazón. Overall, this is puro sabor cubano, pre-Alí Babá y sus cuarenta ladrones, a perfect complement to some dark Bacardí and a Padrón Ejecutivo cigar. (Albel Delgado)

EditorsPick: Much to his surprise, Cheo Feliciano's 1971 solo debut Cheo was a runaway success, because he was off the scene in drug rehabilitation at the time he signed with Fania's subsidiary Vaya label. Witness to the contract was Catalino "Tite" Curet Alonso, who co-produced and wrote most of the project, including the hits "Anacaona" (the single sold over 140,000 copies) and "Mi Triste Problema" (the single was no. 1 in New York and a top 5 hit in Puerto Rico). "Every tune on that recording was a hit. It is still my biggest album in appreciation and in sales," said Cheo in Mary Kent's book Salsa Talks! (2005). Very highly recommended. (John Child)

EditorsPick: Típica 73 came into being as an off-shoot of Ray Barretto's salsa orchestra in 1972 and had undergone a number of changes by the time they recorded Charangueando in the summer of 1978 (though not issued by Fania until 1980). One of my favourite Típica albums, the project has a wonderfully loose quality and is packed with solos from the band's virtuoso personnel. Very highly recommended. (John Child)
